Im Rahmen der Annual Education Conference werden Kristine und Gerhard Hausch im August auch für zwei Tage Christchurch besuchen, um sich persönlich ein Bild von der derzeitigen Lage zu machen. Fest eingeplant sind Besuche an der Burnside High School und an der Aranui High School. Bei der Gelegenheit werden wir die eingegangenen Spendengelder für Allie – mittlerweile ca. € 6.000! – offiziell übergeben. Vielen, vielen Dank an alle Spender!

Nachdem wir selbst an die Aranui High School für die Aufrechterhaltung ihres Breakfast Club bereits € 1.000 als „Soforthilfe“ überwiesen hatten, erreichte uns kürzlich vom Lions Club Viersen die unglaubliche Nachricht, dass von dort € 10.000 (!!!) für den Breakfast Club und die Suppenküche der Aranui High School bereit gestellt werden! Wir wissen kaum, wie wir danken sollen – dem Direktor John Rohs verschlug es am Telefon fast die Sprache. Sehr gern werden wir natürlich im Auftrag des Lions Club Viersen diesen Scheck übergeben!
Die Schule liegt in einem der ärmsten Stadtteile von Christchurch, es gab große Zerstörungen durch das Erdbeben. Die Schule, deren neue Gebäude gerade fertig gestellt wurden, musste vorübergehend schließen. Sie ist Heimat für viele Schüler aus sozial schwachen Familien, bietet aber durch spezielle Programme gezielte Förderung auch im nicht-akademischen Bereich und bringt dadurch großartige Talente z.B. im Rugby, in der Musik und im Handwerk hervor.
Hier der Bericht des Schulleiters zur Lage der Schule:
The breakfast club will be an ongoing need - today there were over 90 students - there have been more than 100. This is a result of moving the programme to a time of day when teenagers are more likely to eat. the move from 8am when it is still very cold in the morning has had a dramatic success in making sure students are well fed. I have been taking some photos of it.
We are also providing hot soup of students on Fridays, which is a new innovation. The students are really enjoying this - soup isnt such a traditional food for young people in NZ so we are pleased with this. We have been using our earthquake fund for this too.
We are facing some big issues since the quakes both Feb and June in helping our students with something they love - sport. We have no sports areas that we can use at the moment because of liquefaction on the playing fields and because our courts (tennis/netball) have been torn to pieces by the quakes. This means we have a great financial drain providing transport for students to go to other places every week for weekly games. While I don’t think you have sport in German schools, in NZ schools it's hugely important.
Also related to this, we are having great difficulty getting our very fine Rugby League team to Auckland for the National Championship because the parents cannot afford to pay the airfares this year. We are really struggling with our fundraising for this event. It is a very big part of the life of many of the young men in our school and we are trying to ensure that they can still participate in some events which give them a "normal' teenager's experience. It may be a bit harder for European donors to understand this (what do you think?)
The same applies to our Samoan student choir, who were terribly disappointed, as our application to the School Trustees Association for a grant to help with their travel was turned down. We are hoping and praying that we will find support for this very worthy cause - there is so much involved, with choir uniforms, travel around Christchurch and to Samoa and extra vocal tuition.
